Aston Villa appear ready to land Southampton star Jan Bednarek with the transfer deal agreed in principle.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa have agreed in principle to sign Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek this summer.

Steven Gerrard’s team had an excellent summer transfer window and have already signed a defender in Diego Carlos. The Brazilian doesn’t seem to have made the Villans strong in defense considering they only picked up one win in three games.

Carlos’ injury has now raised the need for a replacement, and Bednarek appears to be that man. The Polish international has proven himself in the Premier League and will bring a lot of experience with him. This could be the shot in the arm that Gerrard and his teammates need to turn things around.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of a loan-to-buy offer and as things stand the talks appear to be progressing smoothly. With an agreement in principle agreed, it will now fall to settle the final details in the coming days. With less than a week until the transfer window closes, Bednarek could prove to be Villa’s acquisition this summer.

All parties seem keen for the deal to go through, and that bodes well for Villa. The Midlands side have been dealt a cruel blow as Carlos will now miss the rest of the season after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury. With Kortney Hause also sent on loan to Watford, Villa find themselves with Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings in central defence.

Neither player inspires confidence, and bringing in Bednarek is more of a priority than a luxury. Loaning it out is a low-risk move that could pay off massively in the months to come. Strong on the ball and good in the air, the Polish ace has all the skills needed to thrive in Gerrard’s system.

The Liverpool legend needs his side to start clicking soon, and unless that happens serious questions could be raised over his ability as a manager. Having a strong defense gives him the foundation to build something special, and given the circumstances, Bednarek could be a wise addition.
