Barcelona’s need for a winger has led them to England as the club are close to signing Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Adama Traore.

According to Sport, there is a tentative deal in place which would see the 26-year-old rejoin his former club on a six-month loan. Once the loan ends, the plan is to sign Traore on a four-year contract in June.

There were conflicting reports as to whether or not a purchase option would be included, but that seems to be the case.

Considering Ansu Fati’s injury, Barcelona felt the need to strengthen the attack. Xavi wanted to sign Alvaro Morata but with that deal looking almost impossible, they turned their attention to Traore.

Traore had been linked with a move to Tottenham but suspended the transfer once it became clear the Catalans’ interest in him was real. There were contacts between the two sides in early December with Traore open to a move.

It’s important to note that Traore is not a striker, which is the position the club were looking to strengthen hence the interest in Morata. Xavi can simply decide to use Luuk de Jong as a striker or use Ferran Torres as a fake ‘9’.

Either way, Traore is likely to play as a winger and it’s an area they need to strengthen as Fati is out long-term and Ousmane Dembélé’s situation is yet to be resolved.

The price of the option to buy ranges from €20m to €35m but for Barcelona the important thing is that they won’t have to pay it unless they want to. Traore has 18 months left on his current deal and would eventually return to Wolves if Barcelona refuse to sign him permanently.

With Torres and now Traore, the club have signed two Spanish internationals. Torres has been thrust into the squad since his arrival and that will likely be the case with Traore as well. As for the wingers, Xavi relied on Barca players such as Abde and Ferran Jutgla.

The transfer window is set to close on Monday and Barcelona might not be over yet. The club is still looking for a new left-back.
